Happy Wednesday Y'all!

This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week is...

Yap / Yapping / Yapper

Definition:

Excessive, often meaningless talking or chattering that adds little value to a conversation

Context:

The term "yap" has historical roots dating back to the 1600s referencing the repetitive sound of a small dog's bark.  By the 1800s, it had shifted to describe human chattering, especially talk considered excessive or without substance.

The term experienced a major resurgence on TikTok / social media in mid-2023, when it became a widespread meme & slang term used to describe people who talk excessively.  Today's usage ranges from light-hearted criticism ("what is bro yapping about?") to self-aware humor, with some people proudly identifying as "yappers" or hosting "yapping sessions."

Example:

(all names & events in the following scenario have been made up)

Ahri: β€œWow - that meeting could have been an email.”

Joee: β€œRight? He wouldn't stop yapping about 'synergy.'”

Fun Fact:

A 1996 Stanford study found that complaining (or even being complained to) for just 30 minutes can release hormones that physically damage the brain, shrinking the hippocampus which is involved in memory formation, learning, and emotions.
