This created a meme template where users would caption images of celebrities or everyday people with "understood the assignment" to highlight perfect execution of challenges, whether fashion looks, performances, or achievements.

The phrase's popularity exploded further in fall 2021 when Dallas rapper Tay Money released the song "The Assignment" with the hook "I understood the assignment," which became a TikTok favorite and cemented the expression in mainstream Gen-Z vocabulary.
