Happy Wednesday Y'all!
This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week:
|
Definition:
Saying someone “snapped” is used to express admiration or
praise for their exceptional performance, appearance, or action.
|
Context:
In a completely unrelated sense than meaning someone
physically snapped an object or emotionally snapped in anger, or obviously snapped
your fingers… the phrase "snapped" as used in modern Gen-Z slang most likely
originated in the rap music scene (around 2017 according to Urban Dictionary records),
where it was used to describe a rapper delivering an impressively fierce or
hard-hitting verse.
Over time, the usage of "snapped" expanded beyond rap
music to encompass various contexts where someone goes above and beyond or does
something exceptionally well. Common use cases include praising a dancer's
choreography, complimenting a makeup look, or acknowledging an individual's extra
effort in any given task. The phrase is most frequently used in reaction videos
on social media platforms like TikTok, where users express their amazement at the
talents or achievements of others. Another popular trend is using the phrase
“God really snapped when he made ____.”

Elyjah: “Yo,
that Chris Renzema concert last night was sooo good🔥”
Nevaduh: “Dude
he snapped with that acoustic solo!”
|
Fun
Fact:
The snapping of a finger was first depicted in ancient
Greek art around 300 B.C. and was used by musicians and dancers to keep rhythm.
Today, finger snapping ranges from body percussion in many cultures, to a quiet
alternative to clapping, to a sassy gesture done in a “z-formation,” to an iconic
villain gesture reference from Thanos in Marvel's Avengers Endgame movie – quite
versatile!
