Happy Wednesday Y'all!
(and late Happy New Year!)
This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week:
|
Definition:
Describes something exceptionally good or
impressive
|
Context:
The musical "slap" is often credited to Bay
Area hip-hop slang from the early 2000s,
where a song that slaps is one that has a
prominent beat (perhaps as if its deep bass
metaphorically slaps you in the face, or it
makes you slap the roof of your car in
excitement). The phrase gained
mainstream popularity in the mid-2010s
through social media, where its meaning has
broadened to describe anything of high
quality - from food to fashion to
entertainment (e.g. "this X slaps").
Sometimes it's used casually / ironically
when applied to mundane items like
sandwiches or everyday experiences.

Gnat:
βHow's that new burger place downtown?β
Tilley:
βDude, it slaps! Best
burgers I've had in ages.β
|
Fun Fact:
The U.S. Supreme Court Building houses a
basketball court on its fifth floor, making
it the court that sits above the actual
Supreme Court courtroom. This
smaller-than-regulation-sized court, aptly
named "The Highest Court in the Land," was
converted from a spare room in the 1940s and
has been used by various employees and even
Supreme Court Justices for basketball games
and other fitness activities.
