Happy Thursday Y'all!

This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week is...

Opp

Definition:

Short for "opponent" or "opposition," referring to an enemy, rival, or adversary

Context:

The term "opp" (pronounced "awp") emerged in Chicago rap culture in the early 2010s to mean enemies or rivals in street contexts.  It spread throughout hip-hop culture in the mid-to-late 2010s, eventually making its way into mainstream Gen-Z vocabulary via social media platforms like TikTok & Twitter.

While the term originally had more serious connotations related to gang rivalries, it's now also commonly used ironically by young people to describe not just actual enemies, but also minor rivals or even playful opponents.  The phrase has spawned variations like "consider yourself an opp" which became a popular meme format in 2024 for humorously calling out people for trivial disagreements or preferences.

Fun Fact:

In 1949, an official boxing match between a bear and a man named Gus Waldorf was held in New York, with the bear emerging victorious.  The haunting photographs from this bizarre event became the most famous images from the boxing bear era, cementing Waldorf's unfortunate legacy as a boxer primarily known for losing to an ursine opp.
