Context:
"On God" originated from African-American Vernacular
English (AAVE) with some of the earliest records from 2008 showing the meaning as
"When you're serious, and no one believes you." It became notable as an online
phrase in 2014 from mainstream Twitter accounts that began to use it as an image
caption.
Now it is used in both memes and verbal speak, often in
similar situations as (or paired with) βno capβ or βfrβ ("for real") to mean βtelling
the truth.β Sometimes, on social media platforms and texting, the term βOn Godβ
is further abbreviated to ONG.
Despite the use of the word βGodβ it really doesnβt carry
any religious connotations.
