Happy Wednesday Y'all!

This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week:

OP

Definition:

β€œOverpowered” (pronounced by saying the letters β€œO” & β€œP”) to mean something is too powerful

Context:

The phrase originated in online gaming communities to describes a skill, character or weapon in a game that is incredibly strong.  Often it is overpowered to the point of needing correction, since it is throwing the game out of balance and ruining people’s fun.

Now it is used casually in conversation both inside & outside gaming to describe anything that is especially good/useful/powerful.  And Gen-Z gets creative with usage... describing things like Chick-fil-A sauce, Amazon Prime, and Steph Curry as OP (it doesn’t have to make complete sense – just roll with it).

Example:

(for legal reasons, all names & events in the following scenario have been made up)

Atom: β€œZach Edey is so tall, it’s not even fair.”

Gab: β€œYeah, he’s OP. Too bad it wasn’t enough for Purdue to win the championshipπŸ˜’β€

Fun Fact:

In certain online contexts, OP can also mean β€œOriginal Poster” or β€œOriginal Post.”  This usage comes appears on chat forums such as Reddit where commenters can refer to the initial person who made a post or started a thread (i.e. β€œthe OP meant to say” or β€œsee OP”).
