Happy Wednesday Y'all!
This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week:
|
Definition:
The act of intensely concentrating, focusing, or
committing to a task or goal
|
Context:
The phrase "lock in" was documented back in 2009 on Urban
Dictionary as "Get Extra Extra focused on your dream," and is thought by some to have
origins in military terminology, such as "locked and loaded" or "target acquired,"
which suggests a high level of readiness and focus. In 2023 the phrase went
viral through memes, often featuring images of individuals with serious or deadpan
expressions, symbolizing their "locked in" state.
It has since become a part of everyday speech among Gen-Z
(e.g. "I'm locked in," "gotta lock in," etc.) to describe a state of intense
concentration or commitment in various contexts, such as sports, academics, video
games, or work.

Fun
Fact:
In the last two decades, studies show that human attention
spans have dropped from 12 seconds in 2000 to 8 seconds in 2015, below that of a
goldfish at 9 seconds... kind of.
Actually, the truth is more complex than that popular
headline. Our selective attention may have shortened, but our
sustained attention can still last for hours, depending on the task at
hand. In a world of overwhelming information and stimulation, our brains are
simply adapting to filter out the noise - but no doubt, the instant gratification from
social media, the illusion of multi-tasking, information overload, FOMO, and constant
notifications definitely add to the feeling of our focus dwindling awayπ
Time to slow down and lock in!
