Happy Wednesday Y'all!

This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week:

Just Kidding... Unless?

Definition:

A phrase used by someone as a follow up to an implicative message, trying to brush it off by laughing and saying "just kidding," but then affirming their seriousness by adding "...unless?" after a short pause

Context:

The phrase is a copypasta (see Fun Fact) which went viral on Twitter in the summer of 2019.  The copypasta evolved to a meme format typically featuring two pictures of a character in different poses – the first of which is nonchalant, with the second one usually showing a shift in the characters eyes or expression, representing the "unless?" part of the phrase.  Variations of the joke have since emerged for any weird or sus statements, and is now even used in verbal speak.

Example:

(for legal reasons, all names & events in the following scenario have been made up)

Deraian: β€œWhat if we took your car to the beach and did donuts in the sand? ”

Henree: β€œuhhh...”

Deraian: β€œhahaha just kidding...”

Henree: β€œ...”

Deraian: β€œ...”

Henree: β€œ...”

Deraian: β€œ...unless?”

Fun Fact:

Copypasta β€“ internet slang for any block of text that gets copied and pasted over and over again, typically disseminated by individuals through online discussion forums and social networking sites.  The term is an English portmanteau of "copy," "paste" and "pasta."  Although it shares some characteristics with spam in the sense they're both unsolicited (and often considered a nuisance), copypastas are mainly spread through human operators for humor / irony whereas the latter is automatically generated by electronic messaging systems.
