Happy Friday Y'all!
This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week:
|
Definition:
A tongue-in-cheek reaction along the lines of “stop being
dramatic, you’re overthinking this, don't take it so seriously, it's not that
important.”
|
Context:
The exact origins are unknown, but the first record on
Urban Dictionary dates back to 2014, with it entering the mainstream around 2020.
Context & tone are important here: it could be
positive / neutral, saying “just relax, don’t overthink it,” OR it can be used to
insult someone who thinks they’re being deep when they’re just talking nonsense.
Sometimes in order to preemptively counter anyone that
would dare attempt to say “its not that deep,” the phrase is ironically turned around
and used to highlight something (for example, a song) that in fact
“is that deep.”
Note: Use with tact; if used too flippantly, it could
cause someone to feel invalidated or misunderstood for something that is actually a
serious situation or genuinely important to them.

(for legal
reasons, all names & events in the following scenario have been made
up)
|
Gab: “Dude, the
song Careless Whisper speaks to me on so many levels: intellectually, spiritually,
mathematically… ”
Ayeden: “-wait-
”
Gab:
“…grammatically, politically, digitally… ”
Ayden: “Yeahhh
now you’re just saying words – respectfully, it’s just a song bro, it’s not
that deep ”
Gab:
“…medically, ecologically… ”

Fun
Fact:
The keyboard layout was originally alphabetical, but
letters that were commonly pressed one after another were separated so that
typewriters wouldn't stick (hence why we now have this very unintuitive QWERTY layout
– smh). Also, TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using only the
letters on the top row of the keyboard.
