Happy Wednesday Y'all!

This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week:

Gucci

Definition:

Primarily used for positivity (as in "good," "cool," "great," or "awesome,"), often to express agreement or to communicate that everything is fine (e.g. β€œall Gucci” = β€œall good”)

Context:

The usage of β€œGucci” in this context originated from hip-hop culture beginning around 2008, where artists began incorporating the brand into lyrics as a symbol of luxury and success in reference to the expensive Italian Gucci designer brand.  Over time, it evolved into a widely recognized slang term among young adults and teenagers who live in urban environments, made even more popular after the (extremely repetitive) Lil Pump song β€œGucci Gang” released in 2017.  Ultimately it has transcended its fashion roots to become synonymous with positivity or expressing approval / satisfaction, effectively replacing the word β€œgood.”

Most common phrases: β€œyou Gucci?,” β€œI’m Gucci,” β€œare we Gucci?,” β€œwe’re Gucci,” β€œit’s all Gucci,” β€œeverything Gucci?,” β€œtotally Gucci”

Example:

(for legal reasons, all names & events in the following scenario have been made up)

Kaleb: β€œI know I probably celebrated too much when my team beat yours… is everything cool between us?”

Cristi: β€œYeah, we gucci, no issues.”

Fun Fact:

In 1998, Gucci’s β€œGenius Jeans” entered the Guinness World Records as the most expensive pair of jeans in the world, valued at a whopping $3,134.  A record that was only broken in 2005 when Levis sold a pair of jeans for $60,000 at auction.
