This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week:

Goated

 

Definition:

A variation of "G.O.A.T." (Greatest Of All Time) used to describe someone or something as exceptionally impressive, awesome, or the best in its category

 

Context:

"GOAT" has been around since the 90s from the sports world to describe exceptional athletes.  Over time, it evolved into a versatile slang term popular among Gen-Z & younger millennials.  The most recent variation, "goated," gained significant traction in the late 2010s and early 2020s, particularly in gaming communities and on social media platforms.

 

The usage of "goated" is grammatically ambiguous, often appearing in various contexts and sentence structures. For example, "wait im goated" is a common expression used to suddenly realize or declare one's own excellence (often used in memes with cute animals).  "Lowkey goated" is used to describe something as subtly or unexpectedly impressive.  The phrase "goated with the sauce" emerged from a popular Twitter copypasta and is used to describe someone with exceptional style or skill.

Nikohl: “Did you see Janja Garnbret kill it in the Women's Olympic Sport Climbing?!”

Joeee: “Yeah, she's goated - deserved gold for sure!”
