Happy Wednesday Y'all!
This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week:
|
Definition:
The act of attempting to limit others' participation in a
particular interest, identity, or experience based on arbitrary criteria, often to
maintain exclusivity or a sense of superiority
|
Context:
The term "gatekeeping" in its modern slang context emerged
during the 2010s, gaining significant traction online, particularly on Reddit and
X/Twitter. It originated from the traditional concept of gatekeeping in media
and information control but evolved to describe exclusionary behavior within fandoms,
subcultures, & social groups (usually by self-appointed 'guardians').
It's commonly seen in statements like "You're not a
real fan if you haven't seen/read/played X" or "Only true X will understand
this." Gatekeeping is generally frowned upon by Gen-Z as elitist &
unnecessarily divisive, and is often called out on social media.

Paytun: βweakk!
come back when you've only slept 1 hour for 3 nights straight!β
Rachet:
β...woww, are you seriously gatekeeping unhealthy sleep habits?β

Fun
Fact:
It would appear as if the US government is gatekeeping a
staggering 1.4 billion pounds of cheese in mines below Missouri; however, this
stockpile is the result of a dairy industry bailout that began in the 1970s.
Despite efforts to distribute the excess "government cheese" to food banks and
community centers, the cheese hoard has only grown from 500 million pounds in 1980 to
1.4 billion pounds by 2019. The existence of these "cheese caves" highlights a
larger issue - the US government's continued sustainment of an industry that is not
growing on its own, especially considering the declining dairy consumption and
increasing rates of lactose intolerance among Americans.
