Context:
Originating in the competitive gaming world
of the late 1990s, "gg" first appeared in
online chess forums and early multiplayer
games like StarCraft and Quake as a polite
sportsmanlike gesture between players at a
match's conclusion to either to acknowledge
one's own defeat or praise the opponent's
superior skills. As it became a common
phrase online, sarcastic / antagonistic
variations emerged such as the dismissive
"gg ez" (implying an easy victory) or "gg no
re" (suggesting the opponent isn't worthy of
a rematch).
Nowadays, while still common in gaming
culture, "gg" has transcended its origins
and can be used as a response (either
digitally or verbally) to the conclusion of
everyday situations - used both sincerely to
acknowledge genuine accomplishment ("gg,
finally handed in my thesis") or ironically
to indicate a metaphorical "game over" when
someone makes a mistake or faces an
unavoidable outcome ("I'm definitely going
to fail this test... gg").
