Context:

The German word Krippe for “crib, manger” (likely related to the German word Krebe for basket) meaning "enclosed child's bed with barred sides" is 1640s; probably from frequent use in reference to the manger where infant Jesus was laid.

The modern use of “crib” from rap and pop culture possibly stems from likening your home to a baby bed – a place of comfort and safety. It was popularized in 2000 by the MTV show, Cribs, where celebrities show off their homes.
