Happy Wednesday Y'all!
This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week is...
|
Definition:
Doomed, over, done for, in trouble,
exhausted, defeated, humiliated, no hope of
success
|
Context:
The slang use of "cooked" can be traced back
to at least 2009 on Twitter, with increasing
use throughout the late 2010s in relation to
sports losses & defeats. It saw a
massive surge in popularity among Gen-Z
through social media in early 2024.
The term has multiple contexts of use:
-
declaring "I'm cooked" means you're
acknowledging hopelessness in your
situation
-
saying someone "got cooked" is similar to
saying they were roasted or humiliated
-
in relationships, it can signal a romantic
situation is beyond repair or that you've
encountered a major red flag
-
it has also spawned related memes like
"When life so cooked you gotta pull out
this combo," referring to using comfort
activities to cope with difficult times
(i.e. favorite music + video game)
Note: "I'm cooked" is unrelated to the Gen-Z phrase "let him cook" (which interestingly uses "cook" in a
positive light).

Fun Fact:
Mageirocophobia is the extreme / irrational
fear of cooking, derived from the Greek word
"mΓ‘geiros" (chef or butcher). This
phobia can manifest in various ways, such as
fear of causing illness, following recipes,
preparing inedible food, poor presentation,
the cooking process itself, knowledge of
food, or even food intake.
