Happy Wednesday Y'all!
This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week is...
|
Definition:
A label for something or someone that is
out-of-touch, trying too hard to be trendy,
or following outdated aesthetics now
considered uncool
|
Context:
The term "cheugy" (pronounced "chew-gee")
was created in 2013 by Beverly Hills high
school student Gaby Rasson to describe peers
who seemed "slightly off trend," but it only
gained mainstream popularity in 2021 through
TikTok and a subsequent New York Times
article. Cheugy occupies a unique
space between "basic" and "uncool" - it's
not necessarily negative, but rather an
observational term used to identify formerly
trendy items or behaviors that have fallen
out of style (like Ugg boots, skinny jeans,
or "live, laugh, love" signs).
Ironically, as the term gained mainstream
popularity, many began noting that using the
word "cheugy" had itself become cheugy:
Is βCheugyβ The New βBasicβ? If You Have
to Ask, Youβre Probably Pretty Cheugy
Yourself

Zack:
βWow- someone put 'Live, Laugh, Love' as
their high school yearbook quoteβ
Tayler:
βYeah... so cheugy...β
|
Fun Fact:
The distinctive growl sound effect of
Chewbacca, aka Chewie, from Star Wars (as he
speaks his native tongue, Shyriiwook) came
from a blurry, heavily edited mixture of
lion, walrus, camel, bear, tiger, badger,
and rabbit sounds⦠and somehow Han Solo can
understand it perfectly.
