Happy Wednesday Y'all!

This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week is...

Cap

Definition:

A lie, falsehood, or exaggeration, with the opposite "no cap" indicating complete honesty or sincerity

Context:

The slang use of "cap" originated in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) tracing back to the 1900s.  The term rapidly gained mainstream popularity in 2017 through hip-hop culture, spreading through Atlanta rap circles before being widely adopted by Gen-Z.

See the following uses:

  • Cap: A lie or exaggeration or something contested
  • Capping / Cappin': The act of deliberately lying or exaggerating
  • No Cap: Expressing / swearing that you’re honest or completely serious about something
  • That’s Cap: Catching someone in the act of lying or expressing disbelief in something
  • Stop Capping: A request to ask someone to stop lying or exaggerating
  • 🧒: A shorter way to represent "cap" via emoji when texting

Example:

(all names & events in the following scenario have been made up)

Dayvid: β€œIs my haircut bad?”

Ryelee: β€œNo...”

Dayvid: β€œPhew, I was worried—”

Ryelee: β€œ...no cap, you look like you lost a fight with a lawnmower”

Fun Fact:

In 1860, the Brooklyn Excelsiors introduced the ancestor of the modern baseball cap, featuring a rounded top, long peak, and button on top.  By the 1940s, the modern baseball cap was born, with latex rubber inside the hat for structure and a longer peak designed to protect players' eyes from the sun.
