Happy Wednesday Y'all!

This week's Gen-Z Phrase of the Week:

Bae

Definition:

A term of endearment to reference one's romantic partner, similar to "boo" or "baby"

Context:

The term "bae" emerged during the early 2010s as what many believe to be a shortened form of "babe" or "baby," first gaining significant traction in hip-hop culture.  While some claim it's an acronym for "before anyone else," linguistic experts generally view this as a backronym - an acronym created after the word was already in use.

The term grew over the years in popularity through social media, hip-hop music, and internet memes (e.g. "salt bae").  Notably, the "bae caught me sleeping" trend briefly went viral poking fun at those who try too hard to showcase their relationships on social media by staging fake candid photos of themselves "sleeping."  While the term's popularity has waned over time, its usage has become more versatile, serving both as a term for a romantic partner ("hanging with my bae") and weirdly even as a general expression of approval ("this pizza is bae").

Example:

Khris: β€œOoh you're dressed up fancy!”

Justen: β€œYeah, got an anniversary dinner with bae tonight”

Fun Fact:

Some figs contain wasps inside them!  Kind of.  Many species of figs around the world have a unique pollination process that involves a special type of female fig wasp crawling inside the fruit to lay its eggs.  Unfortunately, it loses its wings in the process and dies inside the fig, leading to the widespread rumor that "there are wasps inside figs."

Don't worry though - there’s no wasp in there by the time people are eating the fruit.  An enzyme breaks down the wasp's body, which is then absorbed by the fruit, leaving only the crunchy seeds behind.  Furthermore, these days many fig varieties that we buy in grocery stores and at farmers markets in the US don’t even require pollination.
